Help Is On It’s Way

Discouragement – you know that sense of hope lost, waning confidence, and deflated enthusiasm? One can recognize its presence when you sense that feeling of dispiritedness that comes to wrap itself comfortably around you. If not recognized and overcome, it will subtlety pull it’s victim ever so gently down underneath the waters of disappointment and despair .

When one of my daughters was very young she took swimming lessons. Week after week I would sit poolside and watch as she struggled to swim. Being small and unable to swim at this point, she would often be overcome by the water. She would slowly sink under the water. As she began to sink she would raise her hand high in the air. She eventually would be far enough beneath the water that all that remained visible was her hand.  Her hand being held ever so high, a signal to her instructor that she was in need of help. While being gradually covered beneath the water she did not struggle, or panic. She simply held up her arm with confidence, knowing her help was on it’s way. She could take this stance of assurance, trusting that her instructor would rescue her, because he had done so multiple times before. She knew him in no other way then trustworthy, on time, and fully capable. She was never disappointed in her hope for help. Her instructor did indeed come to her rescue each and every time. Just as she was sure he would.

There are times in our lives where we need to rest, knowing our rescuer has seen our signal, and heard our cries. He is on His way. We can take comfort in the very nature of our Savior. He will see our need for help, and be right on time. After all He has done this for us time and time again. Help may come in many different ways. It may be delivered as a word of encouragement, or a simple act of generosity, and kindness. A shoulder to cry on, or a safe place to share one’s heart. It may be found in written words, or  lived out before us in the lives of those sent our way.  It may be found in a whisper, or spoken out loud. However it arrives it will be exactly what we need, exactly when we need it.

I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord. –
Psalm 27:13-14
